Headteacher's Welcome

Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls has a long tradition of providing students with a high quality, broad and balanced education. This is a happy and successful school where students, teachers and support staff enjoy being part of the Sutton Girls’ community. Our teachers are subject specialists who share their enthusiasm as well as their knowledge. Our students are encouraged to develop a growth mindset; see the value of effort, have a positive approach to overcoming difficulties and actively engage in their learning.

The welcoming and supportive atmosphere is underpinned by excellent pastoral care and well-planned transition programmes. Throughout Years 7 to 13 there is a programme of Personal Development which enables students to develop their understanding of the world around them, their own character and how to form positive relationships with others. Our tutor time programme, assemblies, house activities and character-based reward system help students become well-rounded individuals who are equipped for the next steps in their educational journey.

Our Year 13 Senior Student Ambassadors are fantastic role models for the Years 7-12  Student Leaders in each of the five Character Teams.  The varied leadership opportunities include school council, environment committee, mentoring, house competitions and charity events. Our day-to-day activities and ethos mean we live up to our motto ‘not for our own advantage but for the common good’.

There is a huge variety of extra-curricular activities on offer here. There are numerous sports, drama, music, clubs and societies for students to participate in, many of which are led by our sixth formers. We have an extensive range of super-curricular activities which enable students to enhance their learning beyond examination specifications and explore topics of interest in more depth. These include science Olympiads, maths and coding challenges, essay and debating competitions. There is a wide variety of trips and visits organised both in the UK and internationally which puts classroom knowledge into context and inspires future learning.

We have fantastic facilities, including state-of-the-art science laboratories, well-equipped art, textiles and design classrooms, sports hall, a multi-purpose social space and a library.  Our commitment to students’ success extends beyond their time at Sutton Girls. Students are regularly provided with information and guidance to achieve their future ambitions, whether studying at university, securing an apprenticeship, entering the world of work or planning an amazing gap year. Every student has access to our online careers platform, our independent careers advisor, and we host annual Higher Education and careers fairs.

At Sutton Girls, academic excellence is just one part of the experience. Our inclusive, engaged and vibrant community provides students with numerous opportunities to develop their existing skills, discover new ones, challenge themselves and raise their aspirations. This website offers a flavour of the offer available at Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls.
