Included in this Art Book are the endeavours of our GCSE Art and Textile students accompanied by our Fine Art A-Level students. I congratulate them on their hard work and creativity. Saying goodbye can be seen as a sad event however it heralds the excitement of the future. Change is positive and creative. I think a person, a team, a school department, or a subject can be judged by its effectiveness at creating change. I am proud to have lead change within the Art department at Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for the past 8 years. The privilege of being at the genesis of a painter, a creative thinker, or a change maker is forever a reward. Tomorrow can be scary, but our girls have always provided me a wonderful guiding light to what is possible with a quality education. My move is a small contribution to sharing that quality with a wider pool of students. In the previous art books, I have shared my thoughts, but I now also invite the Art team to share their reflections of the past 12 months. Mr Matthew Davis, outgoing Head of Art

I would rather be an artist than a leader. Ironically, a leader has to follow the rules. - Criss Jami

The work displayed throughout this beautiful set of photographs, showcases the talents of our creative students. It is a joy to experience the progress that each student has made over the years and particularly wonderful to see the journey they are part of. Each project is highly personal, and it is evident how much time and effort are put into every stage of the work as it develops. I am constantly in awe of the talent and creativity on display in the classroom, at Open Evenings, during the Art exhibition and in this Art book. I feel so proud of each one of our students and grateful to work within a close and supportive Art department. I want to express thanks and gratitude for Mr. Davis. He is kind, caring and always an inspiration for all. We are sad to bid him farewell, but we know he has another exciting journey ahead. We eagerly await the stories of his future endeavours! As we look forward to our next chapter too, I warmly welcome Mrs. Parkes to Sutton Girls and the Art Department. Another creative year in the Art department awaits! Wishing all our students a wonderful future ahead. May success follow you every step of the way. Mrs Michelle Collis “Creativity is contagious, pass it on” – Albert Einstein

Just like New Years, the end of the school year is also a time to celebrate, reflect and give thanks. Any creative journey has successes and eureka moments, but along the way, we know we must face the occasional challenge. I’m so proud of the achievements of our students, what they’ve designed and made but also working through those creative blocks, the doubts and the worries. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first academic year here, at Sutton Girls. It has been a privilege and joy to work with such dedicated students and alongside such a wonderful Art team. On a personal note, I would like to thank the Art team for always being so welcoming and supportive. A special thanks to Mr Davis, who has been steadfast at the helm for 8 years, steering the department from strength to strength. Although I’ve only worked with him for a year, it’s safe to say I have learnt so much from him and that I will miss his words of wisdom, caring nature and quick wit! Wishing all our students and Mr Davis all the very best for their next chapters and beyond. Mrs Alice Vine “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use the more you have” – Maya Angelou
